Purple Amethyst has been highly esteemed throughout the ages for its stunning beauty and legendary powers to calm the mind and ease emotions.

The ancient Greeks wore amethyst and made drinking vessels decorated with it in the belief that it would prevent intoxication. It was also used to assist in getting rid of addictions to undesirable habits.

Amethyst was also reputed to control evil thoughts and increase intelligence. It was considered to be a powerful psychic stone of protection against witchcraft and black magic, and known to protect its wearer from disease.

The ancient legend of the Amethyst

The name amethyst derives from the Greek word ametusthos, meaning ‘not intoxicated.’ The wine god Bacchus was angry over an insult and ruled the first person he should meet would be devoured by his tigers. The unfortunate mortal was a beautiful maiden named Amethyst on her way to the shrine of Diana. As the tigers attacked, she sought the protection of the goddess and was saved by being turned into a clear, white crystal. Bacchus, regretting his cruelty, poured the juice of his grapes over the stone, giving the gem its lovely purple hue.

In today’s world, Amethyst is still a remarkable stone of spirituality, known for its abilities to still the mind. Emotionally, amethyst is used to help heal personal losses and grief. Amethyst has a gentle energy that can promote peace and happiness. It also is said to bring inner strength. It is the traditional birthstone of February.

The presence of manganese in clear quartz produces amethyst, while additional amounts of iron vary the purple coloration. It is a semi-precious stone in today’s classifications, but to the ancients, it was a precious stone worth, at times in history, as much as a diamond. The best varieties of amethyst can be found in Siberia, Sri Lanka, Brazil and the Far East.
